A course of acupuncture treatments can increase ovulation frequency in women with PCOS, according to a Swedish study. In a prospective clinical trial, 32 women with PCOS were randomised to receive either acupuncture in combination with manual and low-frequency electrical stimulation, or treatment with a physical therapist, twice a week for 10-13 weeks.
Ovulation frequency during treatment was higher in the acupuncture group compared with the control group, and after 10 to 13 weeks of treatment, circulating levels of a variety of hormones (including oestrone, oestrone sulphate, oestradiol, DHEA and testosterone) were found to have decreased significantly more in the acupuncture group compared to the control group.
